Anyone care to comment on why Mount Saint Mary College repeated their Fall ad in the Spring market? They just posted the same exact job listing on HigherEdJobs.com. What strikes me as odd is that they are conducting campus interviews soon. Yet, they will be conducting conference interviews at the upcoming APA Central meeting in Chicago.
What gives? Two positions or split personality?

MSMC in NY?
No clue, except a certain amount of indecision and flakiness and a tendency to wait until the last minute in the department's hiring practices. I worked for them as an adjunct. They were not good to their adjuncts.

Maybe you're confusing the Mount Saint Mary's in Maryland with the Mount Saint Mary in New York? These Catholics are everywhere.

Nope. Same place. I heard from somewhere else that their first search didn't get administrative approval. So they are now doing their second search. I guess I don't understand what that means.

Mount Saint Mary's in MD scheduled a campus interview, according to the philosophy job wiki. However, the Mount Saint Mary College in NY job ad is indeed strange. Last semester, they advertised on some job website, but not in the APA's Jobs for Philosophers. Also, last semester their job ad disappeared from their own human resources website and they sent no notices of any kind to their applicants. (Did they hire an internal candidate, or what? No notice of any kind.) Also, their job ad from last semester said nothing about interviewing at the APA. Now, this new job ad appears, not in the APAs JFP, but on some job website. Unlike the earlier job ad, this one says they are interviewing at the APA in Chicago. Why not save everyone some time and money by skipping the Chicago conferences for phone interviews and/or direct cuts to campus visit(s)? About the people who already applied for this job before their early deadline in the fall, did the school not contact these people because they did not make a short list, or because the job search was canceled or suspended? Seems unprofessional or at least not courteous

Sounds like them. Although they are within commuting distance from me, I'm not applying cuz I worked for them before and they are way flaky. When I was hired as an adjunct, it was literally the day before the class started. When I was told I was no longer needed, it was a month before classes started (when they said they had decided to hire someone full time to teach all adjunct courses). Then they called me back with a week's notice to see if I wanted to teach a class. To which I said Nope. This was five years ago, but it doesn't sound like they've changed much. The whole school is kinda weird. The campus bookstore is bigger than the library.

I have been informed that there is some confusing surround the tenure-track listing in philosophy at Mt. St. Mary College (NY). The initial ad was placed in posted in the Chronicle of Higher Education early this fall. We have recently reposted the ad in the Jobs for Philosophers. At the time of the initial advertisement, we were unsure whether we would be granted approval for the line. At the end of December, we were granted approval to commence the search to fill the open line.
We have extended the deadline for submitting materials for the position to allow anyone who may not have seen the listing to apply. What I want to make clear is that anyone who has met the early deadline is still under consideration for the position. We will begin to review applications shortly and identify candidates for interviews at the APA Central meeting in Chicago.
If anyone has submitted an application and would like to update their files, feel free to submit the updates and we will place it in your file for consideration.
Finally, if anyone has any questions feel free to contact me.

Thanks Ed!
So that means that you aren't conducting campus visits right now?

dubious,
I don't know if you're confusing Mount St. Mary's (MD) with Mount St. Mary (NY). The former has contacted someone for an on-campus interview; the latter is the one to which Ed Teall is referring.

Thanks Ed! So that means that you aren't conducting campus visits right now? This is to dubious to answer you question - as chair I have the unenviable position of switching classes at the last minute if a class is not covered so I did not check back for questions. Our plan is to do first round interviews at the APA (we are starting to review apps) and then we will bring a few candidates for on campus interviews. Hope that clarifies it. ed

Anyone heard anything more about this job? According to the wiki, there was an interview at the Central APA... Any new developments?

According to the not-even-remotely personalized, minimal effort photocopied PFO I received, they have hired someone.

I was one of those who had a campus visit. I assure you that you should not be upset. This school is very screwed up. What is more, Newberg looks like a war zone.
