Thanks, cstars.
That was probably the jerkiest thing I've said in a long time, but I've been on the market for a while now without landing anything but a string of one years with 4+ teaching loads and I constantly find myself surrounded by TT people who talk to us contingent faculty folk like we are mentally impaired. Drives me nuts. On the one hand, I consider some of these people friends. On the other, I know that I'm out-publishing them and am generally regarded as a better teacher than them. They are off buying houses and living normal adult lives while I'm working extra in restaurants just to keep from getting kicked out of my crap apartment. Bah! Ever waited on one of your students? It's a bit humiliating. Hopefully this year is the year. Until I know for certain it is, I'm going to be real bitter whenever some department sends me a not particularly carefully put together PFO letter.

I hear you. This is my 4th, and probably final, run on the market. The randomness of the hiring decisions is often staggering. On some occasions, I almost suspect that nepotism might be making a comeback in the academia in general and philosophy in particular. Of course, I know better...

City College of New York - application acknowledged (11/5, 11/23, 11/29) - email stating long list applicants will be finalized week of 12/15 and contacted for APA interviews. (12/8, 12/8) - emailed to schedule APA interview (12/17), ditto, ditto - PFO rejection by email - Over 600 applications received (12/18, ditto)
So, uh, did we ALL apply for this position? It's discouraging to me that there are more than 600 people on the market, period. Let alone that there were more than 600 people applying for this one job.
This is insane.

It really seemed 12/17 was the busiest day yet on the Wiki. Also my most depressing day yet, with no good news for me.
But by my count, here are the number of positions for which (APA or campus or phone) interviews were scheduled (for the first time), by day:
13 on 12/12 13 on 12/13 11 on 12/15 12 on 12/16 13 on 12/17
Maybe it just seemed busier to me since more of my personal dreams were crushed on the 17th than on those previous days. (Please feel free to verify my count.)

Well, I applied for the CCNY job, and got the PFO. 600 applicants? Yowza.

It was an open search, in a place many people want to live.

Even if it is bs, just the fact that they can say it and we are seriously considering it is already a bad sign.

So, is it really the case that search committees haven't been contacting people for the last two days? I count THREE updates dated 12/18, and NONE from today (12/19). What gives? Did everyone else just stop editing the stupid thing? How can there still be upwards of 50 schools that haven't decided whom they want to interview?

Obsessive:
Some places probably aren't doing APA interviews; I know a couple places on my own list said they would update between 12/15-12/19, and so I'm also being obsessive at this point. If it helps, here's my list of places with not much word, or who may be contacting today:
Stephen F Austin State--I'm guessing isn't doing the APA; no philosophy dept (it's english & philosophy); I could be wrong. Mississippi State--no idea UNC-Charlotte--no idea, but only said they might do the APA; they may be looking at hiring at the Associate level, so might be doing some non-APA recruiting...just a guess U Waterloo (CAN)--no idea Capital U (OH)--no idea; did get an acknowledgment but no details U Nebraska--no idea Lewis-Clark State College--no idea Northern Illinois U--said they would schedule APA interviews this week Illinois Wesleyan U--said they would schedule APA interviews this week Texas Lutheran U--acknowledged, but no details; mixed dept, so maybe not doing the APA
If anyone has info for any of the above, post here or on wiki. Thanks.

Here's something I don't get.
Georgia State University -application acknowledged (11/7), shortlisted candidates requested to keep them informed of any offers; short-shortlisted candidates contacted to schedule campus interviews (12/13)
And yet:
Georgia State University -application receipt (12/18)
I'm one of those people who just had his application acknowledged yesterday. That was a surprise to me, because according to the wiki, Georgia State had already shortlisted candidates, and in fact invited people to campus interviews.
Should I just give up hope for this program? Were they acknowledging my app just to be nice, or just to have me give them information about how I heard about the opening?

jphil: I am just as confused as you are. Looking through GSU's protocol for hiring, it just does not make sense that there would be shortlisted candidates so early.

Continuing IheartDescartes' count of the number of positions for which (APA or campus or phone) interviews were scheduled (for the first time), by day:
13 on 12/12 13 on 12/13 11 on 12/15 12 on 12/16 13 on 12/17 3 on 12/18
Is that right?? Just 3 on the 18th?
I count 5 so far on 12/19. Looks like things are winding down...

UNC-Charlotte--no idea, but only said they might do the APA; they may be looking at hiring at the Associate level, so might be doing some non-APA recruiting...just a guess
Here's what I know about UNCC:
UNC Charlotte did phone interviews a couple of weeks ago.
And yet, in an email dated 12/19, the chair at UNCC explains that the position has been "put on hold".
