Does anyone know anything about the February JFP? Is it going to be bigger/smaller than usual? I heard people say that because of the economic situation it would be smaller than usual; but then I also heard people say that since so may tt-jobs were canceled, there would be more temporary jobs available this year. Does anyone have any inside information to share? (BTW, 2/21 is a Sat, so should we expect the JFP to come out on Friday 2/20?)

I don't have any inside information, but my money is on a small JFP. The bits and pieces I've heard suggest that a lot of schools are scaling back their temporary jobs, and I think that will wipe out any "less TT jobs" effect, and then some.

I wonder if a lot of canceled TT searches won't turn into VAP/lecturer searches. The economy is sending a lot of people back to school. E.g., the U of Georgia received a record number of applications for this coming school year. At many places, I imagine they'll ask existing faculty to teach more students per class. But I think there will also be room for some adjuncts too.
That said, this market doesn't always show up in JFP. I know someone who is an adjunct. His school told him that they usually don't get to advertise for this sort of thing until well into Spring semester, when the Dean has a better sense for whether extra sections are filling up.

I don't know if this is true, but someone on a SC told me this and as someone who has never been on a SC I'm willing to defer. It's apparently not uncommon for departments to put out ads without a firm go ahead from the university and so without any firm promises that money will be available for the position. The ad goes out, typically this doesn't blow up in the department's face, but then the admin says that they cannot fund the position and so the search is canceled post job ad. I'm guessing in the past the department's somewhat incautious behavior hasn't come back to haunt any of us because times were good and the department could reasonably assume that the admin wouldn't nix the ad. But, times aren't good and so the searches that were run and canceled might not be run again for some time. It's scary if it's true, but it's as if some schools advertised for jobs that don't exist.

The JFP is up on the APA website, but not accessible yet. WHY THE TEASE??? I guess it drops tomorrow.

It'll suck ass anyway. Last year the Feb. JFP consisted of about 50 temporary jobs in environmental ethics.

It's got three pages of job listings. Mostly VAPs, a few TTs and a couple fellowships. And yes, environmental ethics! Not much on the web only ads either.

VERY screwy JFP. Many of the ads are just relistings from the last JFP - so it seems that we have already missed many of the deadlines (!). Dumb. Plain dumb.

This field has become a joke. The new JFP is absolutely and utterly absurd.

I wasn't expecting much. But it is far worse than I even imagined. Brutal. Looks like it's time to find something else to do with my life.

I have to admit that when I got to the forum to see what other people were saying about the February JFP, I couldn't figure out why "February JFP" and "Sick Joke" were two separate threads.
The February JFPs for the last five years or so contained 60-70+ jobs apiece. This year's contains 23. Even including the web-only ads that were posted along with the Feb. JFP, we're only up to 34—and some of those are repeats!
Fortunately, we all have back-up plans to hold us over until next year, right? And next year will be a bumper crop of TT jobs, right? And there aren't going to be many new PhDs jumping into the pool next year, right?

That's the thing: it is probably only going to get worse next year. And many of us will then have gaps on our CVs; there simply are not enough one year jobs available to prevent it. Which even further lowers our chances. If anyone can think of a good reason to try again next year, I'd like to hear it.
